Bowen for migraines
Did you know that Bowen Therapy is an effective and therapeutic bodywork for treating migraines?
If you suffer from migraines then you already know how annoying and disruptive they are. Getting a bad migraine can knock you out for a while, from a few hours to a couple of days. Nausea and pain, feeling really yuck and all you want is to lie down in a quiet, dark room, perhaps after taking medication for it, and sleeping it off.
Many migraine sufferers recognise the build-up to a migraine with symptoms including sensitivity to light and sound, changes to their vision including seeing coloured spots or zigzag patterns or blind spots.
Migraines are a debilitating health issue and if they occur on a frequent basis can greatly hamper your life and daily activities.
Bowen Therapy is a gentle and holistic bodywork that is very effective for the treatment of migraines.
Bowen creates a response in the body which relaxes the autonomic nervous system. It switches it over to the rest and relax state. This is also called the parasympathetic state.
A primary area of focus in Bowen Therapy for the treatment of migraines is work around the tailbone or coccyx. Bowen affects the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of the central nervous system. The clear and colourless fluid surrounds the brain and spinal cord. The fluid provides a gentle cushioning of the brain and assists in rinsing metabolic wastes and medication from the central nervous system.
If there are restrictions or blockages in the CSF, this can cause migraines as well as neck and back pain.
When the Bowen is done around the coccyx, it creates a cascading effect in movement throughout the CSF, much like waves at the beach. Rolling through, wave after wave, moving the clear, colourless fluid - all the way from the tailbone and up along the spine into the head. It truly is one of the most profound moves in Bowen Therapy and indeed effects the whole body. Clients have often told me it feels just like gentle waves moving through their bodies after the coccyx work is performed.
If you have ever had a fall on your coccyx, even as a child, this can be a factor in migraines occurring, even years down the track.
Other areas of interest that I look at are your jaw, neck, shoulders and sciatic nerve. All these areas can also play a part in the development of migraines.
The beauty of Bowen is it addresses the WHOLE body. It truly is a holistic therapy.
Bowen Therapy affects the:
· Nervous system – switches it from sympathetic to parasympathetic state
· Lymphatic system - gets the lymph fluid moving
· Fascia – the connective tissue which runs through our bodies, supports us like a finely woven net. Bowen goes to where there are knots/dehydrated areas/scars and the waves created from a Bowen move travel along the fascia, relaxing tight and “blocked” areas
· And it affects movement of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) when Bowen is performed around the coccyx
